The buffet gang has been acting extremely oddly since the crisis. I think they believe they have some secret data, given to them from jpmorgan/fed that no one else has. To them, this justifies their unsubstantiated claims that the bailout was this or that. They are convinced if they did a general bailout, it would have been even lower which is probably true. The Keynsians know that if we start pushing on a string, we are going to have to get serious about the gov't creating demand(Read this as start world war 3) => the so called gloom and doom comments. The problem is that m1 multiplier is not reflecting the real multiplier, especially if you are a small business owner, and even more especially if you are 20-> 30, and even more if you are an african american male between the age of 20 to 30 in a town dominated by small businesses. These people are in a deflationary crisis that is as bad as the worst of the great depression. Telling them to suck it up, is insane.

I am right wing, but even I know their is something wrong in america and no is talking about:

- The fact that gov't stats are completely crazy and people are making policy decisions based on them.
- Powerful figures make statements based on "secret data"
- The prison industrial complex will be my countries undoing.

So I hear a lot of stuff like

" that a SQL RDBM should always be your first choice? like in the sense, use postgres unless you have a reason not to"

I actually believed this statement for a while, even though I am a bit of an HBase fanboy. The reasons for it are what you would expect:

SQL is standard, and their is a lot of business logic
We got nailed in the 60s with tons of proprietary databases, and we don't wanna do that again
SQL is stable and performs damn near ideally at what it is good at.
SQL scales down very well.

However, I think the big problem is that all we had was SQL for so long. To me, when i hear people bashing MR/HBase and claiming that SQL had this years ago, I tend to view them saying stuff like. Why would you ever need lists or maps hashtables are incredibly fast, their is tons of research of how to use them,etc.

Of course hash tables aren't the answer to everything, and with the introduction of technologies like PIG and Hive, it's not SQL the language which map reduce can't use, it's the underlying datastorage and query strategies that are radically different.

In regards to HBase, if you find yourself serializing objects or storing unstructured data, then SQL doesn't really work well. It is designed to be an analytics engine. Using MySQL as JSON cache, a key value store, or on webscale data is just a bad idea.

I see a couple of things which need to happen.

Better education on the history of SQL, why it beat its contenders needs to flow into the hadoop world/NoSQL.
NoSQL tools need to be more robust, supported, and differentiated.
Real horizontally scalable SQL needs to not be so expensive. When I say horizontal scalability, I mean write scalability, and a strategy which doesn't involve resharding should be adopted. If it can't do this effectively, maybe SQL's day is over, for service providers.
Some secret HBase magic sauce to get HBase to scale down should be invented.

If someone was interviewing and they said, "I use a hashtable first and then only fall back into other datastructures", you might question their capability as a programmer. Many programmers that I look up to, and consider my peers(or teachers) are in this state. Let's fix this.

I have been shunned by some of my friends over the last two years because my opinions on our current state of affairs bothers them(although the ones who followed my investment advice are pretty happy about it(After all my 401k is up this year and last, how's yours doing?))

Their is a lot to be hopeful about in our lifetimes. The rate of technological progress is amazing. We have the technology to harness the sun and wind to a level which would allow endless energy to the whole world. Food can be grown in plenty and we could easily have a world with tens of billions of people. BioTech will probably cure most cancer. The next stage of Bell’s Law has kicked in and we have figured out how to leverage masses of commodity hardware to work on a single problem(just like VMS!). Unlicensed radio will soon alleviate the need for any centralized communication systems. Finance has reached levels of complexity to allow the democracy of capital to provide a standard of living to the entire world that is unimaginable.

Their are some scary parts, bioengineering will be a great blessing and a terrible curse, for instance the babies born 15 years from now will have amazing genes. This will provide for even more accelerated progress. But the old may feel useless. Continued acceleration in industrial power will allow even the smallest nations to build the bomb. Not to mention a technological singularity which will frighten all those who lived lives before it? America, a great and moral nation has reached levels of power to provide safety to much of the world, but at what cost?

However, we need to face where we are. The economies of the world are in serious trouble because we as a society wont standup for what we know is right. In fact, I can't even talk about history or today’s finance without being shunned as a Cassandra screaming at the sky. Liberty and Freedom are being attacked at a rate in the US on levels that I never expected from the Obama presidency (who i voted for btw). People are panicking and others are just tuning out.

We must unite as a society, not with faith or hope, or happy feelings, but with knowledge.Facts never moved politicians or motivated the masses but they can save us. You may think I am depressing, crazy, paranoid, or just annoying but I will not shut up. If we reject reality because it is not convenient we will fail, society will fail. But if we take the bull by the horns, learn what we cannot know and act with wisdom we can succeed.

Ok so by now I hope I am in the group of people who "since you have been consistently correct about the economy, we should listen and verify".

Usless Predictions:

- Europe is going to fracture because their isn't enough money in the west to cover the 60 trillion in debt coming out of EE. Guess rumsfeld got it correct about new europe , old europe.

Now everyone knows, only a trader or a fool invests in the stock market short term, and you have to be really smart to buy specific stocks because of technical evalutations, but lets break it down.

Obviously prices are falling in line with more traditional recession numbers but we really need to get Price Earning Ratios down to the 8 level. Bigger issue is the earnings crash which is slightly frightning. So let's try some simple rules

- Avoid finance companies

- Companies which have lost huge %s without large changes in fundementals

- Good Price Earning ratios

- Companies large enough to weather the storm(or get gov't bailouts)

Advice:

- Teach your children Mandarin, especially if China continues to provide large cash handouts to their villages. We could actually see another 250 million chinese moving into the chinese middle class.

- This sounds weird but if you live in a western country, make sure you have a couple weeks of storable food. You can still use alot of this stuff for cooking anyways.This is normal to do elsewhere in the world. It's a very liquid investment. It is unlikly to depreceate in value in unexpected ways. It is a relatively low cost high payout investment strategy. You can eat it unlike gold and silver.

- Don't listen to politicians, learn how to farm,think long term.

Ok so I believe the earth is getting warmer. I believe it is caused by humans, specifically energy production and agriculture. However this whole global warming movement is full of so much nonsense that I fear that our society is not developed enough to address it. Anyway some nonsense in the movie( I should say everything hawking said seemed about right)

- The neomalthus claims that not enough sunlight comes down to run our world (14:00 ish). Besides the zeta jules of geothermal power on the planet, or the zeta jules of wind, there is a bout 1.3kwatt/square meter. The earth is about 510,072,000 km². So that's about 66, Petawatts or 5 Petawatts usuable. or 125,000 times the entire nuclear production of the planet. So yes, less than 10% of 1% of 1% of the usuable solar energy could replace all of our current energy uses. These claims are insulting and frankly insane/dangerous. These claims could be used to justify unnessecary genocide. When people say that we can't produce enough food, energy , housing or medicine for the entire planet please respond "malthus was wrong, chimps make tools which changes everything"

- It didn't focus on the fundemental problems to solving the problem, namely the financial markets. The current price of a barrell oil is now below its marginal cost. Why is this happening? A 1% reduction in the demand of oil, the crash of financial markets is causing some interesting changes to the currency and commodity markets and because everyone knows that the US is about to dump huge amounts of money into new energy resources(mainly nuclear last I checked), and they need to drop the price to kill those projects before they happen.

- This movie completely ignores the fundemental issue with albido.

- This movie focused on smooth talking politicians without presenting the science(because I guess that would put people to sleep). Telling people your evil this is bad we need to fix it may get people's attention but it wont allow them to make good decisions.

- The belief that the tribal humans were in some type of balance with nature is absurd and an

oversimplified view of the world. Look at Australia.

Today, i held up my company's process by making an error. It is odd because when it happened, I had so much support that people almost naturally assumed it wasn't my fault. In the end, the mistake was mine, and our process simply failed to find this type of bug. The interesting thing is that people's natural response, in some sense is not to blame me. I find this odd. I feel as though my generation would never scream Mea culpa to the sky. And the idea of blame is something very interesting to me. Have other people found this to be true. Are we harder on people who we have less confidence in, rather than those who we have more? What is blame, and why do people fear it? Is it tied to ego, or simply career progression?

So at defcon I found out that people use that get_random_int bullshit. It's best feature is the fact that the md4 of jiffies+pid is supposed to be random. I figure you could at least improve it with using rtdsc instead of jiffies. Their is also http://dev.gentoo.org/~pappy/kernel/linux-2.6.21.5-get_random_long-AT_ENTROPY.patch. But i think probing the oscilator should be low overhead enough. Also does anyone remember which side is the low and which side is the high on rtdsc?

I heard about a really bad court case from the grim days of the south

Here were some facts as far as I know it;

The music industry was doing so well. Small artists running independent labels and the like. But the tide is turning again. I worry people are being drawn to the dark-side of the music industry in droves. It is pretty much official that being a small sized band is enough, just to feed yourself, but that is about it. Being a medium sized band, with a medium sized following, doesn't actually gross any money. In fact it is mostly a money sync nowadays. A lot of this has to do with the expense of touring, but their are other issues involved. So here are some interesting goals now that we can do Internet distribution. 1) Focus on sights like insight and pitchfork which are independent media sources, to provide a centralised place for free media. I worry about their add revenue sources, but what can you do, its American. 2) Develop a recognizee NPO, which accredits these sights for their neutrality. Verifying that the musicians and music enthusiasts who run the sights do not have a conflict of interest will be interesting. 3) Give credit to distributors who are willing to go directly to the band to make albums(Think clap you hands say yea) 4) Write to magazines like spin and rolling stones, and have them cover bands which are not in New York or Los Angeles. This is the most worrisome, as these large media magazines are pretty lazy. 5) Come up with other ideas to keep the crap which has happened to news happening completely to music.

I am really worried about israel. I feel as though the issues involved with the continued crisis obscure the real problem. What is zionism in todays world? How can Israel protect the rights of its citizens? Can Israel just be a be a state with jews in it?

Facts:

At the current rate of birth and immigration , by 2020 Israel will no longer be primarily a jewish country.
Israel cannot survive even a small amount of nuclear detonations.
Consider (חוק השבות) it states (poorly translated) that Jews may settle in Israel and gain citizenship, but not the right of return of arabs born in those lands, explicitly.

Opinions: I believe Israel must choose between being a democracy and a jewish state. This problem should be dealt with now, in the form of a constitution. Israel never had a constitution for secular versus religious reasons, instead they passed the 9 basic laws. Israel, should remain a home for jews (A homeland even), and I feel as though as long as the laws of Israel allow this, then the goals of the zionism of the 40s and 50s are complete. A place where they can live. But we must be clear to seperate this form of zionism from contemporary zionism.

This is why I think the only way that Israel can protect the lives and rights of the jews who live inside it, is by becoming a full secular state. I will respond to the two most common criticisms to this belief of mine.

Critique 1: Israel although being a jewish state is secular.

Response 1: Consider fact 3.

On the survivial of Israel. We must be honest with ourselves, the days in which nations can protect themselves from there neighbors with violence, is nearly over. If one listens to the sound clip that I pointed to. You will realize that the people who invented the bomb, realized this in the 40s. Oppenheimer very easily and accuretly predicted, the levels of controls of atomic energy, and that smaller and smaller countries will gain control of atomic weapons.

There are nuclear weapons in the middle east, which are not in the control of Israel and it is only a matter of time before the country, in the status quo is completely destroyed. This is not a problem which can be solved by force, with other nuclear weapons , unless those of Israel are willing to commit an act of genocide on the level of which has been done to them in the past.

Rather than genocide, the key to the future of Israel, must cease to be seen as a Jewish state, it must move to give more power to secular arab muslims as soon as possible. It must forbid laws which bias based on ones religion. It must stop dealing with arab politicians who will attempt to use Jewish Israel for there own good, and attempt to deal with the economic facets of its neighboring countries. Response: I think in a way these criticisms are true, and it will be the greatest problem that Israel will face no matter what they do. Consider the facts I listed above, if one is completely cold blooded, would it not be better for them to fight each other then the jews? So i had a great talk with my doctoral advisor, it was so great, we talked about the futur,e socialism's purpose in a free market and delay tol networks. I told him that I don't care if it my ruins my life but I wont do research for darpa. I brought this up because of

It meant a lot to me that he put so much faith in me. It meant a lot to him that I stood up for what I believe in and was willing to go out on a limb like that. I think if we achieve 10% of what we talked about today I would be vey proud of my life.

My life has been different recently, but I feel like it is going to go back to the old shit, which is probably for the best. I have too much free time right now though. I think it is time to stop fuckin around and get serious about helping the world.

The next question is if I am willing to do that should I be willing to do things like provide more effective polution control mechanisms like, safe filterless cigs so that you will "naturally field strip it" or other marketing ideas. Working in the communications field or any engineering is a responisability. I really need to talk to more engineers about this. I don't think taking pde would be enough.

After the test My test was funny except for one thing. A lot of people were worried about the test ending to early. And the professor said something like well it doesn't matter because it is curved. Then some kid said well that favors those who work fast. In response nearly half the room started making fun of him. I thought about standing up and telling the whole room to stop, so I did. I stood up and said out loud to about 120 people, "Stop that, do you realize what you are doing, what you are doing is not cool or nice". Most people ignored me and went back to there test the other half of the room looked down in shame. I feel like my father.

So I just moved to bumfuck virginia(about 30 minutes out of DC) and things are actually pretty nice(with the exception that I miss portland). So it has been like a month since I have written anything into my blog. I am going to work in the District for this company Secure Software. I am probably going to be super board leaving Portland but whatever. Hopefully Sarah will get back to me so we can go out finally, she is this super cool kid (kid like 22) who I like to hang out with but that is about it. I am trying to decide if I want to go to the reed pool hall , which is supposed to be cool or goto to buck bowling night. I am really going to miss my roommates from portland, we have become good friends in a short time, well at least I like them. I think they probably think I am annoying(that sure is new huh?). I went to DC last week and chilled with the M-Dog and Lurene. It was nice although when Marshall and I went to the black cat the music sucked. The band I wanted to see apparently doesn't play music that is like the stuff on the website and I am not the biggest fan of the new pornographer. I am going to try to round a bunch of friends to do fun stuff in DC with. Crazy fun things. I just hope that people are up for fun. Maybe a DC long range urban croket league. Maybe we could kick some nice midnight garage sales. Maybe we should just all fuck and go out and get drunk. As much as I am looking for someone who will just shut the fuck up and fuck, it would also be cool to have people to laugh with. I don't think I should spend all of my time with Lurene and Marshall as they have lives already which I don't think I fit into well anyways. I miss my friends from Atlanta(now that they are scattered all around the nation). Whenever I think I have some romantic image of what is was like when I was kid I am reminded by one of them when I meet them how cool they are. So I went to the gorge in George Washington. The shins were pretty good but the postal service was amazing. Although I was surprised by the few people getttin down, I had an incredible time dancin the day away. I met two cool women off of craigslist(we met because we all went to the show together). One is going to get me on the long distance kroket league. I went to the bar of the gods the next day. It was pretty cool but the barkeepers may be to cool for me. Monday I speant just chillin. Today I woke up at 5 so I could make it to the 7:30 orientation. My job sounds cool although I think I am going to finnish it in a week.

So it seems as though I got a job with Intel for 3 months. The pay is o.k. the job is cool but they drug test. Of course, with 72 hours anyone who will spend the money on the treatments would come out clean. Yet, should I take the test? They have started mandatory drug tests at school and for every large company what next? I can understand for instance drug testing people who work on heavy machinery or in hospital, but what does this drug testing gain society.
